“This Charming Man” single by The Smiths. The image is a still from Jean Cocteau’s ORPHEUS.
“We’re interested in beauty because it can be very positive. It’s good to be associated with non-violent things; we’d rather it was Cocteau instead of broken bottles, or any other kind of garishness.” - Morrissey
Jean Marais in Orpheus has always kinda struck me as the lovechild between Morrissey and Kenneth Branagh. and by “always” i mean “since i started writing that last sentence,” but now i’ve convinced myself. have fun trying to un-see that.
while we’re on the subject, it’s always a good time to listen to “This Charming Man.”
Criterion’s new edition of Orpheus hits DVD & Blu-ray on 8/30/2011.
